For my A2 exam project I have chosen to explore and develop the question Night. For initial research I took images all based around the theme of Night. Rather than limiting my images to one particular theme, I kept my range of images broad, ranging from landscapes at night to people at night. From my initial images, I now feel confident at exposing my images at night with conditions such as street lamps and complete darkness.
I started to research different photographers, all that centre around my theme of Night. I chose Anthony Rivera, George Mitchell and John Brownlow, all of whom are documentary photographers who have produced photography work at night. However, George Mitchell uses a the genre of documentary to tell the story of a prostitute he met, following both her personal and work life.
Both John Brownlow and Anthony Rivera have used the documentary genre to explore the streets and the people who are on a particular street at the particular time they are taking the image. Anthony Rivera focuses on the streets of LA to capture fleeting moments of different peoples lives. John Brownlow uses the streets of London as his main location, also capturing random people in his images.
All three of my chosen photographers work in black and white and so this is something I am going to explore within my own project, possibly making it a prominent theme throughout. I have previously experimented with black and white in past projects and so it is something I am comfortable using in my work.
Using inspiration from my photographers I am going to use the streets at night to complete my project. I am going to use my camera and a tripod to capture a mixture of the lights, people and the atmosphere of the night.
All of my photography is going to be shot at night using a tripod and slow shutter speeds to accommodate for the right conditions. I am going to use a documentary genre for this project, creating a narrative through my work, either based around one single person and their story or multiple people who are on the streets at night.
