Development 5

For this shoot I used the same location as my shoot in development 3 as I wanted to develop on the idea of night workers such as bouncers and musicians. I went into the city centre capturing those who work at night, allowing me to contrast these images of the ones in which I capture the drunken, fun aspect of night. I have incorporated all three of my photographers into this shoot through my use of lighting, portraiture, documentary and street photography. For most of these images I didn't have a tripod and instead chose to put my camera on a high iso to accommodate the particular settings such as darkness. This allowed me to capture spur of the moment images, that I would not have been able to get had I had to set up a tripod.

I chose to take this particular images because I wanted to expand on my use of windows at night to portray the different aspects of night. This image a window that has been divided in half by a black frame and cut off from the bottom with images of food. Inside in the distance there is a man behind the counter, who is cooking food as part of his job. The image is black and white, in keeping with the running theme throughout the project. I think this image has been successful as it portrays my idea of nightlife through the use of windows, but from a different perspective to my previous images. Whereas my previous images show people sat down in a takeaway/restaurant at night, this image portrays the workers within the takeaway/restaurant businesses who cater to those who go in for leisure.

This image portrays a young girl sat on a set of steps at night. The image is black and white creating a high contrast particularly between the door and the letterboxes. I took this image using George Mitchell as inspiration. He captures images of a woman in similar locations. However, whereas Mitchell focuses on one woman creating a whole documentary on one particular subject, I have decided to take only a few images of the one particular girl, therefore not creating a documentary nor centring my whole project on the girl but instead including her within the use of night which is the main theme through my project. I think this image is interesting because it contrasts the innocent side of the young girl with the more experienced street wise girl. The flower wreath around the subjects head as well as the positioning of the arms suggests an innocent pure air to the young girl. The arms may suggest that the young girl is trying to protect herself from the world around her. However, the positioning of the legs suggests that the subject is more aware than the viewer is first led to believe. Rather than the legs being crossed in a defensive manner in which to protect herself, the legs are positioned at a creative angle . I think the use of the steps leading up to the door creates depth within the image allowing the figure in the middle of the picture to stand out more.

This image portrays two men which their arms around each other at night. I chose to take this particular picture as I wanted to portray the relationship between two people amidst their night out in which they have been drinking and having fun. I think this image has been successful in portraying the relationship between these two particular subjects, even though the nature of their relationship has been left ambiguous to the viewer. It is clear from the body language and positioning of the arms around each other that what ever kind of relationship the two subjects have, whether it be friendship or as partners, they have a good one. I like the resulting questions that come from this image creating a cliff hanger in the story. When viewing this image, the viewer gets to experience a brief glimpse of the life of the two subjects, however, questions arise about the story of the two men, creating a depth to the image. The image is black and white, in keeping with the theme of the photographers and the project as well as creating a high contrast within the image.
