For my first development shoot I took pictures in the style of John Brownlow. Just as Brownlow does, I used different angles when taking the pictures, creating different positions within my images. I took pictures observing the people around me, as this is something Brownlow does, however whereas John Brownlow uses the streets, I used the inside of a restaurant at night, creating a different atmosphere within my images. I am going to do a second shoot using different angles with my camera as I feel my first one hasn't been entirely successful. Even though I have experimented with different angles, I am going to try and experiment with pictures on the street as I think it will have a more successful outcome.
Re-shoot
Still using John Brownlow as inspiration I did a second shoot, using a variety of different angles to create various different positions within my images. I decided to do a re-shoot as I think my first set of images weren't as successful as they could have been and I wanted to experiment with this particular style on the streets, as John Brownlow does.
This image shows the back of a person, assumed to be a woman because of the long hair, sat on a bus. The image has been taken at night, however, as a result of the long shutter speed it appears as if the image was taken in the day as a result of the light. The image is black and white, creating a fair amount of contrast as well as staying with the theme that is running throughout the project.
The spontaneity of the image creates an air of mystery. The viewer immediately wants to find out more about the subject such as what does she look like from the front? and where is she heading to on the bus? The viewpoint in which the image has been taken creates depth as not only are questions posed as to who the person is who is the centre focus of the image, but the use of seats and window at the front elongates the image. The use of natural lighting coming from the front of the image, highlights the majority of the image, isolating the majority of the contrast to the figure of the subject and all that is around her. I think this has been a successful image as it captures a moment in the life of a stranger, something I am exploring in my project, whilst incorporating the use of night and black and white.
This image shows a group of 4 people all waiting to cross the road whilst a tram passes. The image is black and white creating a fair amount of contrast, something which is further aided by the use of natural light, which highlights certain areas of the image.
I think this image has been successful in experimenting with different angles to portray street photography. This allowed me to capture a moment in the lives of the strangers without alerting or alarming them to what I was trying to achieve.
